Does Stress Cause High Pulse And Chest Discomfort?

Posted on Tue, 8 Jul 2014
Question: Hi Dr,

Following up our first session a couple of weeks ago.
I find your advice very accurate for me. I do need to smile more and relax more. Deep breaths is important too, easy to forget during the day. I think stress is the cause of my high pulse in the morning and some chest discomfort associated with it.

But my neck and back still gives me worries though. If I do something which flares up my leg radiation or neck pain/arm radiation which is a movement that I have done before, then I don't worry much, because I will remember that last time I did it, the symptoms were just temporary. But if there is a new incident, then my mind starts to worry more (has the disc bulged further, will I get symptoms that require immediate surgery etc). And there are numerous of such potential incidents every day. I go to chiropractor weekly, so I get some help there to explain the different symptoms.
I haven't had any worries lately about other health matters though. I try not to think about it and give it a couple of days to solve itself first. Having permanent tinnitus, all-be-it not a severe kind, and neck/back problems for a few years now has made me worry all kinds of illnesses can become permanent. But it is not usually like that, thankfully.

I am a christian. Every night before I sleep I pray. I try to make sure I not just pray for my own health problems to get better, but also to say thanks when I have been happy with something, and also pray for others too. I did try calling a "healer" before who prayed for me, but didn't help anything.

Thank you for giving me advice.

Brief Answer:
make today HAPPY

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX
Thank you for the direct question.

Let me assure you that the seven steps that I gave you are elixirs of anxiety and OCD patients. Therefore, I can assure you, following them sincerely, shall provide you permanent relief.

Let me remind you. the cause of your high pulse and chest discomfort associated with it is not due to stress but Obsessive thoughts and anxiety. Those symptoms should come down as you learn to ignore them and concentrate on your day to day tasks.

Regarding the obsessive thinking about your back. You have a problem, tinnitus. The pain associated with it shall be there. We need not ignore them knowingly. they know how not to trouble when you are active in other activities. Never try to control your thoughts. Once you try that way, you are trying to escape from those negative thoughts. Escape is not possible until you have other thoughts or activities. This is called redirection. Your thoughts get redirected when those negative thoughts come, because the priority is not the negative thoughts, but those active activities.

You must learn to live with the pain. The best way to manage any recurrent pain is to engage in activities which makes you to overcome the pain. Mind you, the pain is still there, we learn to overthink it.

We have the capacity to do it. Let me explain - During childhood, children play games - assume you fell down and injured yourself with a handsome wound during a game - naturally you ignore the wound (if it is not so big) and carryon playing - after the game, you notice it and start crying or worrying - reach home and you feel the pain more and more - you may not even move your legs for next two days or so.

What does this signify? This signifies the ability of our mind - to forget a pain and wound, even though they are present, just with the help of activities which interests you. Such an act is still possible by a matured mind. You can easily do it.

Praying is always good. Praying for others also is fruitful. Let me tell you, praying should always be "Thanks". Tomorrow is uncertain. Past is past and gave us a lot of positive lessons. Today is where we lives. Let us be positive. Only positive thoughts, leads us forward and makes today happier. Negative thoughts about future makes us sensitive, emotional and worrisome and thereby kills our TODAY. Therefore learn to make today HAPPY by engaging in activities which are interesting.

I also noticed your other questions to other doctors regarding nocturnal erections, morning erections and other sexual problems. I see that you are much worried about your sexual organ and sexual matters. These sort of things also come under OCD, though related to sexology. I being psychologist and sexologist, sincerely advice you not to separate them.

Hope this answers your query. Available for further clarifications.
God bless you.
