Does Black Molds In House During Pregnancy Cause Any Complication?
Question: My daughter is 13 wks pg and we just found areas on the ceiling of what looks like black mold. How dangerous is this to her & fetus? Does she have to come in contact with it? Can she continue to live in this home? She is freaking out and panicking about this.

Hi.... Many thanks for consulting in Health Care Magic. Black molds on ceiling are usually caused by growth of fungal elements in moist and humid environment. They keep releasing spores which remain in the room atmosphere as suspended particulate matter. When these spores are inhaled, they cause allergic symptoms like bronchitis or cough or wheeze. It could even develop into severe asthma attack or respiratory distress. Please ask her not to panic as mental stress in mother is not good for fetus. Any illness which affects the mother will have its effects on the fetus. The illnesses which I quoted can cause spontaneous abortion due to excessive cough or can cause decreased growth of the fetus, which can result in low birth weight. Fetal sensitization for allergens to which the mother is exposed to is also of concern.
I suggest the pregnant lady stay in some other place till the current location is cleaned.
