Do Atorvastatin, Lisinopril And Selegiline Cause Dizziness?

default
Posted on Wed, 8 Oct 2014
Question: I am takng three medications and all three have dizziness and light-headedness as possible side effects. They are Atorvastatin, Lisinopril/HCTZ, and Selegiline. Can the combination of all three increase or ensure risk of dizziness? I also am going thru menopause and live in TX so the hot weather has also produced some nasty dizzy spells lately. How should I address this issue with my PA?

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have gone through your medical history carefully and understood your concerns.

There are many causes to dizziness. Specifically, in your case, dizziness might be caused by:

- oscillations in blood sugar level: most probably due to lisinopril/HCTZ use (they might reduce it)

- dehydration: hot weather will increase sweating; HCTZ will induce more urination as it is a diuretic. The final result is less water circulating in your body (dehydration) and loss of electrolytes

- hormonal changes as you are going through menopause

- Selegiline use

I advise to:
- monitor your blood pressure (bp), record the results for further evaluations; If bp readings are as low as 100/70 as you are reporting, should discuss with your cardiologist to take off HCTZ and to lower the dose of Lisinopril

- increase water intake

- measure your blood electrolytes, so you can take proper supplementation depending on possible deficiency

- have your meals regularly, do not skip any

- monitor your blood sugar levels (bs), record the results to get further evaluated by your doctor

- run thyroid function testing and complete blood count

Hope it helped!
