Question: Dear Dr. XXXXXXX

Right after my daughters 16 th Birthday she was hospitalized for severe Mania. Ironically, she was also on her menstral cycle. She would get better but would end up back in the hospital each time she started her mentral cycle.this went on for 3 months, and was very traumatic for her and our entire family. 11 months later, one week before her menstal cycle she had an Severe anxiety attack. This time no mania but depression, even though when asked she would say she didn’t know if she was depressed. We started her on Low doses of Latuda, for about a month. Exactly 4 days before her menstal cycle it seemed the dose of Latuda was not working at all. We are now on Seraquel, day two but plan to move back to Latuda because Seraquel has her sedated.

Are you familiar with any condition that might be causing the mental conditions?

Brief Answer:
Yes. This is a menstrual related psychiatric disorder

Detailed Answer:
thank you for your question.
your daughter has a clear association between her menstruation and psychiatric instability. Menstruation signals specific hormonal changes that are responsible for many mood changes and may exacerbate psychiatric conditions in some women.
Your daughter will need to see a gynecologist to discuss the suppression of her menstrual cycles with various hormonal treatments as options.
