Autoimmune thyroiditis is the condition when the body's immune system attacks and destroys it's own thyroid tissue (Immune system do not recognize it and regards it as "foreign" )
The prognosis for autoimmune thyroiditis is very good with proper treatment and diet.
Standard treatment is levo thyroxine,the synthetic form of thyroxine (T-4)
which restores the thyroid hormone levels thus reversing the signs and symptoms.
It may complicate without treatment and may lead to multiple organ damage in future.
Regular follow up,clinical examination,repeat thyroid profiles and anti thyroid antibody screenings are strongly advocated for such patients.
