Can An Ultrasound Scan Confirm Kidney Stones?

default
Posted on Thu, 4 May 2017
Question: Hello Doctor,

I have a history of kidney stones every 3-4 years and sometimes even after 5 years. The stones have always passed through urine and the highest size was that of 5.5mm the last time. Stones have been formed in both kidneys. It has been 2 years since I last had stone. Is sonography the only way to check current status? While I am drinking plenty of water what can be the symptoms for me to look out so that I do not get a sudden attack of the kidney stone pain.

Regards,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
The signs and symptoms which can hint to renal stones include nausea/vomiti

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,

I can understand your concern but it is not fully possible to confirm renal stones only with signs and symptoms without performing investigations like ultrasound or CT.

The signs and symptoms which can hint to renal stones include nausea/vomiting with sharp kind of pain in groin area. However, symptoms are not classic and can vary widely. Sometimes there won't be any kind of symptoms.
