Can An MRI Scan Be Done While Having Titanium Bolts In Left Knee?

default
Posted on Sat, 14 Nov 2015
Question: On Friday, I'm scheduled for an MRI on my lower back and pelvis. I have titanium bolts in my left knee, a stainless steel plate with screws in my right ankle, and I am wondering if the metal in my lower extremities will create a problem for me and/or the magnetic resonance machine.

Brief Answer:
It will not affect images of MRI.

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Please don't worry about metal in lower extremities. It will not affect images of MRI.
Now a days,Titanium is used in metals used for implants in our body.Titanium doesn't affect magnetic field of MRI machine,so images are not not distorted.

So,you can safely go for MRI imaging.

The bolts in my knee are an ACL repair/replacement in 1994. The plate and screws in my ankle are from an injury in 1998.
I was told by the respective orthopedic surgeons that the bolts were titanium and the plate and screws were stainless steel…
I have already had one doctor dismiss the stainless steel issue exactly as you did – that is why I decided to utilize my hsubscription to get a better answer.

Brief Answer:
It is not expected to cause any problem

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Even if some part is made up of stainless steel,it is not expected to cause any problem as it is far from the area (hip)where MRI is to be done.
