Question: Is it possible to have a renal mass on a cat scan with enhancement turn out benign after biopsy?

Is it possible for a 1.5 cm solid neoplasm start out as benign, then became cancerous at a later time?

Brief Answer:
Yes, it is possible.

Detailed Answer:
hi dear,
on CT scan you see the renal masses, their size shape and location. but it is difficult to comment on the benign or malignant nature of the mass. masses enhancing on contrast are more likely to be malignant. but a few may be benign. most of the renal masses detected in such a way are malignant masses. so it is not mandatory to have a preoperative biopsy or cytology before surgery. usually these masses are capsulated and injury to the capsule by a needle may lead to the spilage of tumor cells. so needle biopsy is in fact discouraged.
if u have a 1.5 cm solid neoplasm, better to have it investigated further or to get a surgery done or u can have a close surveillance of it.

Do renal cysts enhance on a ct scan?

I was told that I likely have a Bosniak 2f cysts, this was based on a MRI study. I would assume they are termed renal mass as well.

Brief Answer:
Complex cysts may enhance.

Detailed Answer:
hi sir.
I think you are very tense because of cyst.
hope my words will give you piece of mind.

Simple renal cysts don't enhance on CT scan. those which enhance are called complex cysts.

In general tumors may be solid or cystic. A solid tumors is called mass. Tumors with fluid inside r called cysts. these may be benign or malignant.

most of the stage llf tumors are benign, but may be malignant. according to a study, approximately 25% of such tumors were malignant, rest all benign.

so what to do now is a big question...
the options...
1. you can have a close follow up. if the tumor increase in size, go for surgery.
2. surgery upfront, nephron sparing surgery.
3. further workup,,,, urine cytology, PET scan, FNAC etc. But these tests have their own limitations.

hope my answer will help you in decision making.
