Can I Substitute Escitalopram For Venlafaxine?
Question: Can I substitute escitalopram 10mg for venlafaxine since I ran out and wont be able to fill my prescription for escitalopram until September? I was prescribed escitalopram for my depression but it didn't help too much. My insurance lapsed and I wont be covered until September and cannot afford it until then. I've noticed a lack of sleep, decreased appetite, and im not involved life lately.. I just feel kind of numb.
Brief Answer:
Yes, you can.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Yes, you can substitute but both drugs are of different group. Escitalopram is a SSRI drug while Venlafaxine is a SNRI drug. Abrupt change might result in withdrawal. You can shift to 5 mg Escitalopram for a week and start with low dose Venlafaxine that is 37.5 mg after a week the dose can be increased to 75 mg. This will not cause any withdrawal.
Please let me know if you have more doubts.
Thanks.
