Answered by Dr. Bonnie Berger-Durnbaugh (28 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
No need for any kind of testing.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

Casual contact like this, from touching something in the bus, does not present a risk for HIV. So there is no reason to get tested. It does present some risk for developing a cold or other similar infection if you touched your eyes or nose afterwards, so after being in public places, just wash your hands with regular soap and water, one time, such as when you come home. Otherwise, this situation does not pose any risks for infection.

Information

Detailed Answer:
Even if, in some extremely rare situation, a person did IV drugs on the bus and left a needle behind, it would be extremely unlikely for it to poke you. And you would feel it. So don't worry about this.
XXXXXXX have you gone to talk with your doctor as I recommended awhile back? Because I think your thoughts about touching objects and getting HIV may be due to obsessions. And you might feel more at ease and feel better if you get treatment for this, such as with SSRI medication and counseling to help learn techniques for dealing with repeated, intrusive thoughts and anxiety over them. It is nothing to be ashamed of. And you might feel a lot better.

Brief Answer:
No need to go back to look on that bus.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

No, I don't think it will help you to go back to look on that bus.

If you don't remember anything unusual on the bus, then there is nothing to worry about. You would have remembered if you had been poked by a needle. And likely you would have seen it.

Brief Answer:
Reasons for not going back to check the bus.

Detailed Answer:
Reasons I don't think it would be worthwhile to go back to the bus:

1. This was not a risky situation - casual contact does not cause HIV.

2. By now if there were something to look at, it would have moved or been moved.

3. You have no recall of seeing anything concerning while you were on the bus so I don't think it would be useful to go back to it.

Brief Answer:
Ok

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

When I say it might have moved, I am talking about that a lot of people ride a bus so their walking in and out of the bus and sitting and standing could have moved it. Also, the company might have cleaned the bus at the end of the day. But if going back on the bus tomorrow will give you peace, then you have found your solution.

Although the man in front of you may have been behaving oddly, it doesn't sound like he was necessarily an IV drug user who would have left a needle around. That would be an extremely unlikely thing to happen.

Brief Answer:
You are ok.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

There is no need to freak out. You are fine. The event you described would not result in getting HIV.

Unless you have sexual intercourse or exchange of such bodily fluids, or share IV needles, or work in the health care industry where you are poked with a needle that has been used on an HIV patient, or spilled fresh blood from an HIV patient, you will not get HIV. Those are the only situations to be concerned about.
