Question: 65 year old male. lifetime of exercise. no history of any health problems, good weight, good diet. Was put on rosuvastain 3 years ago. Cholesterol fell from 220 to 140. In the last year, started experiencing ongoing headaches, fatigue, memory issues, and joint pain in hips. Stopped taking statin 40 days ago. Feel great and experiencing none of the above effects anymore. Had blood lab done and results are predictable. Cholesterol 220, Triglycerides 57, HDL 57, LDL 152, Non-HDL Cholesterol 163. All other blood numbers are in normal range. Looking for alternatives to Statin. Any help out there?

Hello!

Welcome on - Ask a Doctor - service!

I understand your concern and would like to explain that it seems reasonable the decision to stop rosuvastatin. All the above mentioned issues are likely related to adverse drug effects.

Considering the fact you don't have any other obvious coronary risk factors (hypertension, diabetes, smoking, etc.) your actual blood lipid profile doesn't seem discouraging. Taking alone it doesn't predict high rate of vascular events in the future 10 years.

On my opinion you should keep following the healthy diet (Mediterranean diet), avoid the modifiable coronary risk factors (blood pressure values control, avoid close smoking contacts, etc.), continuing with frequent physical activity.

You could repeat blood lipid profile in a couple of months. In case there appears a trend towards increasing lipid levels, then other alternatives could be tried, like fibrates, Ezetimibe, PCSK9 inhibitors (in extreme case).

You should discuss with your attending cardiologist on the above mentioned issues.

Hope to have been helpful to you!

In case of any further questions, feel free to ask me again.
