Child With High Bilirubin Count. Treatment?

Our baby has been released from the hospital on sunday the 14 of April, 2013 with a bilirubin count of 248. On Monday we went back to the hospital after a lab test indicated a count of 358 and he was under the lights for 2 days which brought the count down to 217. This morning we went for a test and it revealed a count of 267 at what point should we go back to the hospital?

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

What is the age of the child?

Is the child term or preterm?

What is the birth weight of the child?

The normal range of bilirubin will depend on the age of the child at present and on his gestation.

And the bilirubin report should interpreted along with chid birth weight, gestational age, and child present age.

Maintain child hydration by giving adequate and frequent breast feeds.

As the bilirubin is increasing again I advise you to consult the Pediatrician again for interpretation of the report.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards.

Pediatrician Dr. Sanjay Sharma's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for placing your query here.
I can appreciate your concerns.
Light treatment threshold depends upon several factors;
1/-Was the baby born premature or full term ?
2/-How many days old ,since birth ?
3/-Is the baby of average weight?
4/-blood groups of mother & baby?
5/-Is direct coomb test positive ?
In general if the baby is otherwise well & over 1 week old, light therapy is needed at or beyond
350 .
Hope I have answered your query.
If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.
Wish your baby a good health.
