Why Is My Head Injury Taking Time To Heal?

I am a 59 yr old woman. I had a slip and fall on my deck Oct. 28 20011. I was taken to the hospital, had an MRI and 3 stitches then let go home. I feel my head injury is taking very long to heal. It is about the size of a silver dollar, looks like a crater and has clotted blood in it about every 3 days that I have to clean out. I have very little feeling around the out side of this wound. Is this something I should be worried about? Thank you, bjnd

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Welcome to HCM!

It seems what you are suffering from is hematoma. However, hematomas are generally self healing and disappear within few days.

Since you are giving a history of recurrent bleeding and non healing wound, there's a chance that you may be diabetic. Unhealing wounds are very common in people having diabetes. I'd strongly suggest you to visit your treating doctor and get your blood tests done.

Also, I'd advice you to run your blood clotting factor assay tests to rule out any abnormalities.

Apart from this, if there are no other symptoms, then there is no need to worry about it. Also, since the accident is very old, it is unlikely that what you re having now is anything serious.

Hope this information helps.
Feel free to ask if you have any doubt.

Wishing you good health.
With warm regards,
Dr. Sridhar Reddy
