Why Is My Child Coughing At Night?

My 16 months old son has had a flu for a week and his pediatrician prescribed mucolite syrup. He's still coughing at night while sleeping but he said not to worry. He's also teething and have strong diarrhea. Does it usually take a while for the medicine to start healing? Thanks
