Hi, Thanks for the query. A slight amount of discharge is normal in females especially after ovulation under the influence of progesterone hormone. It may need a pad for a few days but it must not be foul smelling. The common cause of foul smelling copious discharge is infection, cervical erosion or polyps of cervix or vagina. Infections by bacteria or parasites cause discharge. Viruses and yeasts also produce such symptoms. The best way to investigate is them by a vaginal examination and testing the discharge for presence of infection. Treatment will depend upon the cause. Cervical erosion is a condition where the outer part of the cervix is replaced by an abnormal lining that contains glands producing copius discharge. Diagnosis is again by examination. It is relieved by using vaginal tablets called pessaries or may need to be cauterized [burnt using current or cold knife under anesthesia]. Polyps are common causes of intermittent spotting and also may cause foul smelling discharge especially when they get infected. The diagnosis is again by examination and they may need to be removed by a minor procedure called polypectomy. Other causes are infections of fallopian tube called pelvic inflammatory disease. This also causes infertility and can be diagnosed by an ultrasound. I suggest that you consult a gynecologist and get yourself examined. It will help in diagnosing infection and polyp. If needed an ultrasound and a vaginal swab testing will help in confirming diagnosis and further treatment. Please do not worry as these are common conditions and can be treated easily.
