Hello,

This is a very common conditions and a very common parents' concern. Every child has adenoids to some extent and it is only advised to be operated upon once it is affecting the quality of life of a child and when child is having breathing difficulty. If adenoids are blocking 3/4th or more of an airway (Seen on X-ray) then it must be operated upon otherwise it can cause various complications like glue ear leading to conductive deafness, high arched palate, tooth abnormalities and change if facial features.

All these complications can affect the growth of a child. If you observe any of these signs in your child and if your child is having breathing difficulty especially at night while sleeping (this could be noted by looking at the child who must be sleeping with an open mouth due to nasal blockade), then you should not delay the surgery and go for it. It will improve the quality of life of the child.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Omair Choudhry, Otolaryngologist / ENT Specialist
