What Is The Survival Rate After Treated Breast And Bone Cancer?

My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer 8 years ago and now it has returned as bone cancer. We found out last summer. She has gone through radiation treatments in August 2010 but now her lastest scan has revealed more tumors and is again going into radiation treatment today. She is in pain in her lower back (tumor) and is being managed with percocet. My question is life expectantcy at this stage. We are hopeful but realistic. She lives about 8 hrs from me and I need to know what to expect from here to time trips to see her.

Hello,

Even though your mother has now bone cancer, she has what it is known as metastatic breast cancer which means that her bone cancer has originated from breast cancer and did not primarily develop in the bone.

Metastatic breast cancer is cured just like the breast cancer. Literature suggests an average of 5-year survival rate since the time of metastatic breast cancer diagnosis, although survival rates vary greatly from person to person.

Some patients have lived for more than 10 years after metastatic breast cancer diagnosis, and the right treatment improves the prognosis.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ervin Toçi
