Hello,

Ortho vera is a patch used for contraception. This birth control contains progestin and estrogen hormones. The patch is placed on the first day of your period on the lower arms or upper arms. The patch should be removed immediately after the 21 days elapse to allow for the menstrual flow to take place.

Relative to the oral contraceptives, at most one out of a hundred women, get pregnant in the first year of the Ortho Evra patch use. Anyways, the patch does not protect against STIs yet it can lead to irresponsible sexual behavior. It can cause spotting, or menstrual pains or cramps as a side effect.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
