What Does Fluctuation In WBC Counts Indicate?
I have had high white blood cell counts for the past 6 months except for one that was at 9. My count today was 16 - the highest yet. I am 58, female and smoke 1/2 pack a day the past two years. They are ordering a bone marrow test. The doctor said that normally if it were leukemia or a bone marrow disease they would keep going up and not fluctuate - is that the case?

Your doctor is right because in Leukemia and bone marrow disease white blood cell count usually do not flutuate. You should to ask your doctor about peripheral blood film.In peripheral blood film we can find out any type of immature cell and those will help in a diagnosis.
