What Does A Single Plaque In The Gastroesophageal Junction Indicate?

I had my first endoscopy today and the doctor found a single plaque in the gastroesophageal junction.Evrything esle seems normal. I'm very concern because all the information on the internet talks about cancer.. Can a single plaque just be a plaque or does it generally indicates something else?

Hello,

Since, you have not mentioned about your age and other symptoms or complaints it is difficult to say about the cause of such a plaque found at endoscopy.

The cause can be confirmed only by biopsy as cancer is a dreaded disease and needs further studies too like CT scan of the chest and abdomen, pH studies, repeated endoscopy and biopsy in difficult cases.

Stop alcohol, smoking and oily and spicy food. If the plaque is due to GERD or Hiatus hernia related problems a course of a PPI like Omeprazole, antacid and Domperidone can help for better.

If it is due to cancer, then a formal surgery can help you the best done under the guidance of a cancer surgeon and Oncologist. So, stop worrying till the reports of biopsy are available and then take an appropriate management as will be guided by the team of Doctors.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant
