What Could Cause Difficulty In Swallowing After Using Opthalmic Erythromycin?

I m currently undergoing treatment for bilateral bacterial pink eye and have been using opthalmic erythromycin for 6 days now... and I am experiencing very painful swallowing. Two days ago, it was just in the middle of my throat and kept me from sleeping. Now, the pain is off to my left when I swallow. I have no difficulty breathing or eating and no fever. I have not seen any pus or bumps in my throat, but it s hard to see if there s inflammation near the tonsils. I ve developed an annoying, tickling cough now and then. I am an otherwise healthy, 34 year old female who is still breastfeeding a 7 month old. Thanks for any help.

ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hi,
Reading your symptoms, I think you have got some pharyngitis along with conjunctivitis. Both may not have started together and hence you think that this could be a side effect of the drug.
This combination symptoms usually occur during viral infections. So, I think it's better to stick on with current treatment for eyes and start warm saline gargles for throat pain.
In most cases it will subside by itself. If there is any secondary bacterial infection, you may be asked to start on antibiotics.
It's always better to take rest and be isolated, because some types of conjunctivitis could be contagious.
