What Causes Sore Throat Along With Difficulty In Swallowing?

Woke up with severe sore throat. Walk-in clinic did rapid strep test which was negative. Next day sneezing, coughing, difficulty swallowing. Assumed it was common cold and it lasted three weeks. Still sore throat, difficulty swallowing, felt sick. Took Augmentin one week and felt better about one week. Feeling sick again, sore throat, difficulty swallowing. Also feel claustrophobic and hard to breathe lying down. Have appointment with ENT in one week. What could this be?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query your infant have symptoms of sore throat along with difficulty in swallowing. Difficulty in swallowing seems to be due to Pharyngitis and Tonsillitis. I would suggest you to consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and he can do a throat swab culture as well as blood tests and Immunoglobulin G levels to rule out the exact cause of the problem and treat you accordingly. In case of Viral infection anti inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen can be advised..
Acetaminophen can be taken for fever. You should also do warm saline gargles 3 to 4 times a day , avoid cold beverage and spicy food.
Do steam inhalation and suck throat lozenges. You can sip plenty of warm water. In case of Bacterial infection antibiotics can be taken along with all other remedies as advised above.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Get Well Soon.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
