What Could Be The Reason For Swelling On Nose And Face Over The Maxillary Sinus?

Twice in the past two months the left side my nose and face have swollen over the maxillary sinus. It comes on quickly with tenderness, and redness. It is soft to the touch. I am currently on Cipro for a UTI and it happened. It goes away almost completely in two days. I was not taking any medication the last time it happened. My dentist did X-rays and it does not appear to be dental related

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi.
Thanks for your query and an elucidate history.

This is called an angio-neurotic edema, you gave the classical description.
There is no sure -shot treatment for this condition.
Looks to be due to an allergy -to what no one ever know.
Symptomatic treatment of a few days with antihistamine and steroid if necessary helps sometimes.
The most important thing to remember is, when such swellings occur inside mouth or throat , there can be an emergency- this is rare but yet to be remembered as it may become life-threatening. And you may bneed an injection of adrenalin.
