What Could Be The Reason For Getting Fever After Having Rabipur For Dog Bite?

Hi my daughter is 7 yrs old. She was diagnose of vasculitis and her ASO test was high (>200 iu/).last last dec 3, 2013. She was given sumapen 250 mg capsule 4x a day for 10 days, pred 10 4.5ml 2x a day for 6 days and zyrtec every night. However, on the 10th day of taking sumapen, she was biten by a dog. It was friday afternoon when she was bitten, and she had fever that night. The owner gave us the certification of the "anti rabies" shot has of their dog, which is just last november. We stil took our daughter to the doctor and she was given a rabipur. Until now, my daughter is sick with fever and she chills mostly around 1-2:30 at dawn. What could be the cause? Is it the rabies? Or is it soem other illness?

Hi,
thanks for writing in.
Since your daughter was on steroids when the dog bite took place she was exposed to the danger of the diseases while in a immunocompromised state by virtue of steroids. This is a very dangerous situation. I would suggest that in such a situation both active and passive immunization is required in the form of rabipur and immunoglobulin injections respectively which can offer the best protection to the patient. Over and above I would also suggest a course of antibiotics preferably broad spectrum to cover any infections.
I hope this answers your doubt.
Regards
