What Causes Sunken Eyes With Dryness In A 90 Year Old?

Hi, my mother is 90 years old and it looks like her eyes have sunken. She had cataracts removed years ago and uses drops for dry eyes ever since. But now the rims of her eyes are red and it looks like you can see space between the eye and the rims. Is this serious?
