What Causes Slight Vaginal Bleeding After Taking 'cytotec' For Abortion?

on Thursday night at 9.00pm. The following morning, there was just a slight spot of blood. She feels pain around her waist and whole body. We went for a scan, the scan says she is not pregnant but 3 different tests says she is pregnant. What may be happening. I'm afraid she might develop complications. Please help

Hallow Dear,

I do empathize your concern.

Cytotec is a medicines which is recommended by WHO for termination of pregnancy up to 9 weeks of gestation. Your girls friend has taken this medicine.

After Cytotec, she had vaginal bleeding; this could be due to the process of abortion. She might not have noticed the products of conception expelled out in form of (whitish red) clots.

Ultrasonography has revealed that there are no products of conception in the uterus. So her uterus is now empty, suggesting she has aborted completely.

The pregnancy test is based on high levels of a hormone named hCG. The levels of this hormone increase during pregnancy. After the abortion, it takes about 10 days or more for the hormonal levels to drop down to undetectable levels. Hence, the pregnancy test may remain positive in spite of completion of abortion for few days. You may repeat the test after about a week or so to confirm that it has become negative.

You should not ignore the possibility of another condition wherein the pregnancy gets implanted outside the uterine cavity (commonly in the tubes). This condition is known as ectopic pregnancy. In ectopic pregnancy, the pregnancy test is positive; however the uterus shows no products of conception in the uterine cavity. Cytotec cannot abort such pregnancies.

Ectopic pregnancy is a serious condition. It cannot grow and results mostly in rupture of the tube leading to alarming bleeding in the abdominal cavity requiring emergency surgical intervention with many units of blood transfusion.

Please report to your Gynaecologist ASAP to evaluate her possibility of ectopic pregnancy, may be by Laparoscopy or other tests. Unruptured ectopic pregnancies can be handled more safely with lesser invasive procedures. If there is no ectopic pregnancy, you can presume that she has aborted completely.

I hope this helps you.
