Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Severe Pain Below Sternum And Under The Ribs?
Approx 2 years I had my gall bladder removed, it was full of stones. In the past 10 days, after eating or drinking I am experiencing severe pain just below my sternum and under my ribs on my right side. I feel pain when I press the area under my sternum. Could more stones have formed, I have heard that this can happen. Should I see my GP? Note, I have just returned from 3 weeks in China.
Most commonly the pain in the epigastric region or the region just below the sternum is caused due to gastritis. It is pretty common. Take small meals at frequent intervals. Take omeprazole one capsule once everyday in the morning for one and a half months. I hope you would be relieved. If not, please consult your doctor. If the gall baldder has already been removed, no stones can further form within it but there is a possibility of stones forming elsewhere. But the possibility is low and I am not worried about it.
