What Is Causing The Swelling Between Clavicle And Sternocleidomastoid Muscle With Pain?

I had cervical fusion in 1998 of c 5/6 and c6/7 with titanium plating. It was preformed as an outpatient surgery. Something went wrong and I now have 4 paralyzed cranial nerves. 9, 10 , 11 and 12 are unilaterally paralyzed. The right side of those Cranial nerves are paralyzed. I suffer off and on with a painful, hard to move, clavicle/shoulder. It swells greatly between the space above the clavicle and the insertion point of my strernocledomastoid muscle, The swelling is very visual and does cause pain to neck movement and some shoulder movement. is this probably due to the nerve paralyzed or the fusion? nothing helps. Thought might try motrin. The swelling last 5 days for a week or so then comes back a few months later.

Cardiologist 's  Response
Hello,

Your symptoms could be related to local inflammation. I recommend checking inflammation tests (complete blood count, PCR, ESR, uric acid plasma levels) and taking indomethacin to help reduce the inflammation and the pain.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ilir Sharka, Cardiologist
