What Causes Red Discoloration And Bruising On Shin?

My right shin has some red discoloration, feels bruised to the touch and when I stretch and some swelling. Has been this way for about three months. I have not hit my shin on anything. I am 53 years old and a female. I am currently on a 1200 calorie diet prescribed by my physician and have a trainer at the gym that has me on a workout program. The only meds I take are for my migraines. I have not brought this to my physician s attention at this time, but am starting to worry more about it. My son, who is a paramedic, says I should have it x-rayed or an MRI done. What say you?
