What Causes Piercing Pain In My Ear After Parotid Mass Removal?
I had a parotid mass about the size of an acorn removed on 12/19/2011 and have slowly gained back feeling in the area around my left ear. In the past few days, I have started to have sharp, piercing pains where the mass was. Should I be concerned or is this normal?
I can understand your concern. As parotid mass was removed by surgical procedure, facial nerve may have been damaged which was the cause of loss of sensation on that side.
As some years has passed since, now the facial nerve is starting to regenerate on its own. This regeneration phenomenon is usually accompanied by the sharp shooting pain you are experiencing. You can also experience feelings of tingling and intermittent numbness in the area until the nerve and its branches are fully regenerated.
Massaging the area can help. If the sensation gets worse or is not improved at all in a month's time, you should see a neurologist for examination and further investigations.
I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HCM. Take care.
