What Causes Painful Sexual Intercourse After Stopping Yaz Pills?
Hello. I'm 32 years old, 115 pounds and 5'4". I was on the same pill (Yaz) for 7 years straight. I began having periods at age 14 and they were always very light and short with a longer than average cycle (bleeding for 3 days, every 32 days). On Yaz, my periods were a little heavier, lasted a day or two longer and were every 28 days. I also had more cramping on the pill (opposite of what most women experience, I know). Last month, I decided to go off the pill and didn't start a new pack after finishing the last one. I started my period this morning, 32 days after the start of my last one. It is VERY heavy, bright red, with a strong metallic smell. Also, for the past few days before starting my period, sexual intercourse has been somewhat painful. Is this normal after going off the pill for so long? I'm in Costa Rica for another 3 weeks and can't visit my regular doctor in the US.

Foul smelling discharge during menstruation associated with painful intercourse is suggestive of pelvic infection. The foul smelling discharge is infectious discharge mixed with the menstrual discharge. Due to infection, there is swelling of the inner reproductory organs; viz. uterus, tubes and/or ovary. During intercourse, the hard penis presses over some of these organs causing pain. Sometimes, the movements of these organs during intercourse also cause pain. You need to have diagnosis confirmed and treated by suitable antibiotics.
