What Causes Painful Lump Around Areola?

My 14 yr old daughter has just develped(1st noticed last night)a red, painful, firm lump all around her areola. Have just given her advil, should she use warm compresses until we can call a Dr in the morning? It reminds me of a clogged milk duct from when I nursed my children. Obviously concerned, but not overly, should I be?

Hi, If I were your treating Doctor for this case of painful breast lump, I would come up with three possibilities, these include:
1.     a subareolar abscess
2.     The second possibility is of folliculitis or infected fibrocystic disease!

3.     The last possibility is of an infected sebaceous cyst or subareolar cyst

In any case there is some infection and she needs cold compress, analgesic/NSAIDS and antibiotics

I suggest you to go for an FNAC test of the lump for confirmation and to relieve your concerns!

Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing her good health.
