What Causes Pain In Left Side Right Below The Ribs?

I am a 69 yr woman. I have had on and off for several yrs sharp painin my left side right below the ribs. The lat couple of days the pain has been really hitting hard. At first I thought I haqd a kindey infection, I still do, but this pain is either in my upper colon or could it be my spleen. It's difficult to breathe and if I keep my leg raised it helps alittle. HELP. I hate going to hospitals. Thanx Victoria Thomas

hello. have you seen a doctor for it before?is it painful when you press on it? you might have costochondritis which means that the cartilage near your ribs gets a bit inflamed especially during extremes in weather, or being in a prolonged position. Try putting warm compresses or liniments when the pain hits you or take a mild analgesic medication. If they do not ease your pain or decrease it you might need to see a doctor for some tests such an x-ray or an ultrasound.
