What Causes Lips And Tongue To Turn Purple?

My 91 year old mother has a heart murmur and is being treated with medication. Today she had an episode where her lips and tongue turned purple and she was staring into space and she couldn t hold her head up. It was a brief episode and once she was moved to her recliner and put her feet up, she seemed to recover. If it happens again, should I take her to the ER?

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

It is possible that there was temporary reduction in blood flow from the heart. This may be due to the murmur or an abnormal rhythm or rate (arrhythmia).

You can monitor for now but contact her doctor for an appointment for review.

If the symptoms recur prior to the appointment then you may need to take her to the ER.

I hope this helps
