What Causes Late Periods Inspite Of Negative Pregnancy Test?

Hi,

While having intercourse, the condom broke and he happened to ejaculate inside me. However, this was 1 day after I had stopped bleeding for that month but to avoid any risk, I did take an iPill about 4 hours after sex. That was the very first time I took one and did not get any side effects, not even withdrawal bleeding. Now however I am 10 days overdue and yet there is no sign of periods. In fact, I am suffering from severe nausea (more so in the mornings which subside gradually during the day). I have taken 3 home pregnancy tests already and all have been negative. Would appreciate your help with respect to this delay and the nausea issue.
Thanks

Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
Have you always had regular ?
If yes, then the symptoms are due to reasons other than pregnancy.
In your case, the standout reason is the I pill.
Any kind of hormonal contraceptive pill itself alters the normal menstrual cycle, it can diminish menstrual bleeding to the extent that once in a while, there would be no period.
I pill can delay the cycle by upto a week.
Stress, anxiety or any kind of emotional upheaval could cause a delayed period.
If you are overweight / extremely underweight, or have gained or lost weight rapidly, period could be delayed.
Again, thyroid and adrenal hormonal imbalances might be responsible.
A condition called poycystic ovaries is characterised in women by delayed and irregular cycles.
Any concurrent medication / hormonal preparation you might have taken, could affect your cycles.
Thickening of the lining of the uterus or ovarian/ uterine tumours might cause such a delay.
Sometimes, it is normal for women to experience some delay / irregularity in the normal cyclicity of the menses. It is called a metropathic cycle and is nothing to worry about, merely an aberration.
In your case the standout reason seems to be stress also.
If cycles were irregular, a blood B HCG test is better than HPT.
All the best
