Hi,
There are to major reasons of increased serum cholesterol.
The first when we have diet rich with animal fat, which contains high amount of cholesterol.
Our organism also produces cholesterol and in some people it may be excess.
The serum cholesterol level is altered by phisical activity and estrogen levels as well.
Phisical activity and high estrogen levels decrease cholesterol.
That is the reason when some people have a low cholesterol diet, are not overweight and exercise much still need statins.

Hope I could help you
