What Causes Chest Pain Post Verapamil Intake?

Hi! I m a 45 yo female. Was recently put on verapamil. 60mg twice daily to treat SVT. I took my first dose on Saturday (11/25). Up until today, I haven t had any issues with it at all. But today I ve been having intermittent chest pain, some tingling in my fingers on my left hand, & my blood pressure has kind of been all over the place. I just took it & it s at 101/59. My heart is 95BPM. I didn t take my evening dose today. As I am planning to call my doc in the morning. Is this normal side effects with this medication?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Coming to your complaint, chest pain post Verapamil intake is a common thing. So there is no need to worry a lot.

Verapamil is a calcium channel blockers which relaxes blood vessels so blood can flow easily. Verapamil is generally used to treat high blood pressure (helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems), prevent chest pain (angina) and control heart rate (atrial fibrillation).

Any drug will be having side effects. Similarly verapamil will be having side effects. The common side effects of dizziness, chest pain, constipation, nausea, headache.

You can follow the below thing for better action of drug.
1. exercising,
2. stopping smoking,
3. eating a low-cholesterol/low-fat diet.
4. Store the drug away from light and moisture

You can go for following tests to rule out any other cause
1. ECG
2. COMPLETE BLOOD PICTURE
3. Troponin-I

Hope you will follow the above things and recover soon from your symptoms.
