What Causes Black Eye After An Eye Injury?

My girlfriend has a vertical gash on the left side of her brow from hitting the framing in our closet at a weird angle, and the gash is wide enough to have to hold together to apply medical tape, but now, her eye is turning black underneath after a few hours. Should I be worried? Could it be a fracture? There is no swelling, just a big gash and black and blue discoloration forming under her eye.
