Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
I would like to know your age, gender, and any comorbidities that you are suffering from like
hypertension, diabetes, etc., you have already mentioned that you are hypothyroid.
Defcort (i.e., Deflazacort) is a steroid drug, commonly used as an anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressant. You have been prescribed this drug probably due to some active
autoimmune arthritis. Being an oral steroid drug, it is associated with side effects like high blood sugar,
high blood pressure, weight gain, susceptibility to infection,
osteoporosis, and acid-peptic disorder. (Though some experts are of the opinion that Deflazacort may produce less gastrointestinal side effects and osteoporosis, but it is not yet proven.) It may produce suppression of the natural steroid axis in the body hence, sudden stoppage of the drug is not advised.
It is recommended that you get your blood sugar and blood pressure checked at regular intervals while you are on this drug. Calcium supplementation and oral
proton pump inhibitor may be needed.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Ayusmati Thakur
