What Are The Complications Of Gestational Diabetes?

I am 30 weeks pregnant and I have gestational diabetes. Which I just found out today and about 2 weeks ago I found out that I am anemic. I go back to the doctors on Thursday but I am really scared and wonder what all types of complications I will or may have during my pregnancy? What are my chances of my baby being born early? Will I be given an ultrasound? And can I be induced at 37 to 38 weeks as long as my baby's longs are developed and she is a good weight?

Hello there,
Sorry that you have developed gestational diabetes(GDM). I would like to know if your sugars were checked at the beginning of pregnancy? Were they normal? If you have developed GDM only now at 30th week which is normal time when it starts then you dont have too much to worry as hormones produced during pregnancy are the reason you have developed this now. You need to from now on keep close track of your sugars. Buy a glucometer and check fasting (should be less than 95) and after 1 hour of food (should be less than 140). Try to reduce all types of sweets and sugars. Include walking or some form of exercis as permitted by your gynaecologist. Do not worry as these small changes help many women to keep sugars under target. If at all you cross limits inspite of measures then you may need small doses of insulin. Most women who can control their sugars carry to full term and do not need to be delivered early. Your ultrasound scans need to be monitored to make sure that baby is not gaining too much weight. Please do not panic. You are at high risk of developing diabetes though and that can be discussed with your doctor after your delivery.
Till then control diet and keep checking sugars to keep them in control.
Hope this helps.
Take care.
