What Are The Chances Of Recovery From Diabetic Coma?

Hello,

I found out my step father is in a diabetic coma. He has been in the hospital since Monday. My mother has beginning stages of alzheimers and the only thing she could tell me was that his blood sugar dropped to a 24. My step father is in his 80's. What are the chances of him waking up? should I be planning a trip home to help with a funeral soon? Please help me. I live in Louisiana and my mother and stepfather live in Kentucky. Its a two day trip home.

Diabetologist 's  Response
Dear sir i can understand your concern.
i am very sorry for the condition of your step father.
in my opinion Diabetic coma is a condition in which your sugars will become very high
in my opinion your father might have suffered a hypoglycemic event as per history.
usually this hypoglycemic events will recover very quickly is glucose is given immediately.
Longer the duration of hypoglycemia there will be more and more brain damage.
in heavy brain damage we can not expect recovery
To understand the nature of injury we need to analyse his lab parameters and conduct a neurological examination.
Best Regards.
