Using Silverex For A Burn On Hand. Will This Cause A Scar?

I have a burn on my hand due to steam since last 3 days. it measures around an inch in diameter. I have been using Silverex ( silver nitrate gel 0.2% w/w). Pl suggest how many days should i be applying and will it leave a mark. Also can i let water on it while bathing especially to clean the silverex gel that sticks to the wound?

Hi there Suma.

The burn on your hand you say is due to steam & i note the size.

I do hope you are not allergic to sulfas & if so, stop silverex.

Yes there will be a mark formed but will resolve with time & one will have to re-evaluate after about 1 mth

I would recommend a cream like Dipgenta (corticosteroid +gentamycin) first for 3-5 days & then shift to silverex. Use both sparingly so as not to form a 'cake' on the surface but enough such that it is absorbed into the skin & the skin gets to breathe.

After a week when it appears healed, you may go for a cream from Bioderma (french company) called Cicabio or Elovera (Ranbaxy) depending on your budget & the region you hail from

If from Bangalore, do come across & allow us to visualise in person. If from any other place in India, do use the HCM directory to help find a good dermatologist nearest you on the ground.

Good luck & here's to a clear skin soon!

Welcome to Healthcare Magic,
In your case is very unlikely to have a scar, mark. If it is small burn Ist degree, then is sufficient clean up with povidone iodine aqueous solution once daily and apply sterile non- adhesive gauze. If you decided apply silver sulfadiazine , then preferable wash /clean with normal saline sterile solutions for irrigation, and not use tap water, try out some plastic bag to protect your hand while taking shower. If you at home try don’t use any bandage/dressing /gauze at all, clean with antiseptic, apply small amount of cream and keep dry your wound.
I wish you good luck and speedy recovery,
Hope this helps and I have answered your query. If you have additional queries don’t hesitate to ask.
Best Regards,

Hi,
Silverex is the ideal medication to be applied as it helps healing very well. It does not lead to any scarring. Scar formation is in fact due to the depth of the burn and the type of the burn and the nature of your body. If the burn wound has got loss of skin, it is advisable not to wet it by bathing until some healing starts. Please consult your doctor for further advice. Take care.
