Unable To Reduce Weight, Tried Diet Plans, Liposuction, No Help. Hypothyroid, On Levothyroxine. Will It Help ?

Last fall I was diagnosed with having hypothyroidism. As a 28 year old female, I was ecstatic because I thought I finally got to the root cause of my inability to lose the weight I wanted to. I maintained a strict diet and exercise routine for years and did lose a lot of weight, but only was able to get down to about 160 lbs (I'm 5'9"). There was still some unattractive stomach fat that looked gross. I ended up having Liposuction done and had 9.1 lbs of fat removed. Within 3 months it was ALL back. It was the worst money spent of my life and I became depressed. So my doctor put me on Levothyroxine and I was hopeful. Within the first few weeks, something weird happened. Instead of me being able to lose weight, I started piling on weight. And it wouldn't stop. I've been on my medication close to 10 months now and I'm gross. I've gained 30 lbs and I look like I'm 6-7 months pregnant. I was never 'skinny' but also wasn't this pot belly gross before. ALL the weigh gain has landed here. My doctor claims all my levels are normal and blames my diet and exercise on the weight gain. My diet and exercise haven't changed. A 1,200-1,500 calorie a day diet with vitamin shouldn't equate to a 30 lb weight gain in my stomach. Why is this medication doing that? Why are there THOUSANDS of similar stories online with the same issues and yet no doctors seem to take it serious and most every website ignores 'weight gain' as a side effect. I need to get this weight gain under control as it's nothing more than a depressing state anytime I look i the mirror and see this pot belly blob. A female with a C/D chest should not have her stomach in a virtual even plane as her chest when she's not pregnant.

hello,
thank you for using health care magic
i red your problem carefully and i understant
levothyroxine is form of thyroid hormone . basically thyroid hormone increases your metabolism which will help you in burning calories.. but thyroid hormone also increases person's appetite so you have to be careful so if large imbalance occurs between your diet and metabolism then your weight can increase..
reduce your calorie intake to 1000.. burn daily 500 calories in gym.. cut down sugar.. cut down carbohydrates instead take protiens .protien need more calorie for digestion so it will help to burn your extra calories .. take more juicy fruit and water...
and dont get depres your problem will be solved soon.. if you want read motivational and positive books..
hope this helped you.. thank you

Hi,
Thanks for using Healthcaremagic,
I have gone through your long story, you must understand that obesity and hypothyroid co exist but obesity is hereditary and also related to your diet and exercise.
You should continue with Levothyroxine as prescribed by your doctor to keep normal TSH level.
If you are not investigated already then get checked for any specific medical cause for obesity like Cushing syndrome if everything is fine then follow a good healthy diet low in calories and strict exercise routine to have a deficit of 500 Kcal daily.
I am sure you will start losing weight slowly and steadily please have patience as it is a slow process as you have undergone liposuction which is shortcut but it comes back.
Please discuss with your Physician about use of drugs like Orlistat which is useful in reducing weight in some cases.
Please also take up yoga and meditation with abdominal muscle exercise.
Do not get depressed it is possible to get back in shape.
Good Luck
Take care.
Dr.Akhilesh Dubey M.D.
