Treatment For Weight Gain, Fatigue, Brain Fog While Taking Levothyroxine?

I have an underactive thyroid, I am taking Levothyroxine (for approx. 6-7 years). My primary care doctor often takes blood tests re: my underactive thyroid, which are always normal. However, I still experience weight gain (I hardly eat at all), fatigue and some brain fog. I am currently prescribed depression and anxiety medications and have been on them for many years. I am seeking a specialist in the area of endocrinology near Winchester, MA or Arlington, MA. I am unhappy with the endocrinologist I have already treated with! Thank you. (P.S. I do not wish to travel into Boston, MA)

Hi there,

Thanks for your query.

You have not mentioned your age, gender, latest TSH report and the dose of Synthroid being taken. I cannot comment in the absence of the said information. As such, the dose of Synthroid needs to adjusted so as to maintain TSH around 1.0

However, apart from underactive thyroid, other causes of weight gain are undetected diabetes, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome(PCOS) in females, some of the anti-depressant drugs and, genetic predisposition.

I might be able to help you if the required information, along with all your problems is provided in greater details.

Consult your doctor and apprise him of my opinion. I am certain that he will agree with me and will prescribe the advised drugs in appropriate doses.

If you find my response helpful and informative, do not forget an “excellent” (5-star rating) to my answer, to ENCOURAGE ALL doctors- engaged in social service- to render sound advice to the FREE queries.

Take care
