Tibia Chip Was Surgically Removed And Ankle Has Arthritis. Toes Numb. Is This Normal?

I am 71, a runner, and last November, I broke a 1.5 by 0.75 inch chip off of my ankle. It was swollen, but, zero pain. The tibia chip was surgically removed, and in addition, my ankle was arthroscopically scrapped of the arthritis. I wen through the 12 sessions of physical therapy. It is now nearly October...my ankle is still a little more bulged on both sides than my left ankle. in addition, my toes are still numb. Is this normal, and not of concern?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Persistence of swelling (nearly one year) after an arthroscopy of ankle joint and numbness in toes is definitely not normal.

A reevaluation has to be made in your case to define the cause of your symptoms.

An MRI scan of the ankle joint is needed to pick up any bony or soft tissue pathology in and around the ankle joint, which establishes the diagnosis.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
