Taken Adderall, Paxil, Lexapro, Celexa, Remeron For Depression. Any Suggestions?

I have been suffering from major depression for years, why does ssri's, snri's, mao, trycyclics all fail? not until my MD tried Adderall, Ritalin then focalin have I experienced some relief? I have tried them all wellbutrin, nardil, paxil, Lexapro, celexa, remeron, Effexor, Prozac, ALL of them. Focalin totally erase my depression, not just covers it up, cures it! I say this in reference to the book by Russell Barkley PhD. Yet the stigma and difficulty is unbelievable! I don't mean to sound ignorant but the medical professionals need to get their head out of their ass and wake up! So many people can be cured that needlessly suffer, my brother is the same and can not get the medication, due to ignorance, any suggestions?

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Greetings !

Welcome to the site.

I can understand your point of view and your sentiments attached to this issue since if a psychostimulant drug like ritalin/focalin had been tried years ago then you could have come out of depression much before.

You see use of a stimulant is not so uncommon a practice that is practiced by seasoned psychiatrists to uplift depressed mood in those who have chronic depression especially when chief anti depressants have failed one after the other so that this stimulant drug can act as an augmenting agent and potentate the action of anti depressant and manage depression.

It is unfortunate that none of your doctors thought of it and you had to endure depression for so long a period. I believe a doctor especially a psychiatrist needs to be open minded and flexible in improvising the treatment regime keeping safety of patient and goal of rendering the patient symptom free as two paramount objectives of his treatment strategy.

Having said that while i support the use of a stimulant like ritalin or focalin as an augmenting agent for managing your depression but i also will like to caution you regarding close monitoring of your symptoms because sometimes this stimulant drug may precipitate mania or hypomania where in there is development of unreasonable and unprovoked elated mood and euphoria which may worsen your condition. So this is just for your awareness about possible complications that may lead by use of stimulant drug so just watch over this.

I hope this helps.

Wish you all the best.

Regards
