Hi and welcome to HCM...
I thank you for posting your query here and I'm definitely going to help you out..
I being a surgeon, we encounter so many such cases and believe me, this
wound infection is a common problem post surgery.
It's called surgical site infection, SSI.
I read your question completely and have understood it well enough..
I will analyze all your points and provide information on how to go about..
1.
Umbilical hernia repair, without a mesh is a good thing especially when you experience SSI like this.
If mesh was used, it had to be removed because, the infection will spread along mesh and facial layers..
2. Little discharge is OK, and again it indicates nothing but SSI.
I am sure, your surgeon would have taken all the sterile precautions but still somehow this SSI comes up!
3. You say it smells bad. Then it's always better to see a doc and not to wait for 2 weeks!!
See, bad smelling discharge indicates a definite infection which needs treatment right away.
4. It's advisable to get a culture done on that bad smelling discharge. And start empirically on antibiotics..
5. Suggest you not to wait.
Hope this helps you, and in case you need any further assistance, please let me know..
Take care and God bless..
