Hello,
You seem to have a lot of stress and trouble around falling asleep. This problem usually does not come alone. I would like to know a few more things before i can help you come to a diagnosis of the problem and choose a treatment option.
1. How old are you?
2. What is your profession? How do you spend your day?
3. How has your mood been lately? For most of the time of the day.
4. Do you experience any of the problems like reduced interest in any work or talking, getting tired easily, feeling worthless, excessive worrying or not enjoying/feeling like eating?
5. Have you had any other bodily complaints?

Based on above factors, we can reach a conclusion about the underlying problem for your insomnia.
As a clinician i advise my patients to maintain a regular routine for most days with fixed time and duration of sleep every day. Daytime sleep should be avoided as much as possible, instead small naps for few minutes can do.

When unable to sleep at night and wide awake, i would suggest relaxation exercises for the body and mind, instead of feeling helpless while staring at the ceiling. There are many ways to relax yourself, most commonly, lie down flat on your bed, close your eyes and consciously relax every muscle of your body from toe to the head. While doing this, just focus on your breathing and give instructions to yourself in your mind, saying 'i am relaxing...i am feeling sleepy...etc'.

These techniques will work better if we target the underlying problem first, which may need use of some medication for a brief period of time.

I hope i have addressed your concern. Feel free to communicate back to me for any further queries.
