Hi,I am Dr. Robert Galamaga (Hematologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I just had blood tests done to aquire insurance and my GGT level was elevated (147). I do not consume alcohol, except for wine maybe once every few months, if that. I am on birth control. I have the IUD mirena. Would mirena cause my levels to be that high? I am 24ys old. 5'4 130lbs. I have a very healthy diet and no other health issues. Right before the insurance co. tested me, I asked my doctor to run blood tests and she did mention that my liver function (as she put it) was slightly elevated, but she was not concerned. Well this number the insurance co. gave me seems really high and I am really worried! Please advise.
an isolated high ggt is can be caused by drugs, alcohol, fatty liver, hepatitis, tumors, etc. The most common causes are drug use (particularly drugs for epilepsy and psychotropic drugs), significant alcohol consumption and fatty liver in diabetes mellitus, alcholol abuse or obesity. More tests are needed to investigate the cause. First of all the other liver enzymes are needed (transaminases and alkaline phosphatase) and then a liver ultrasound scan which can detect anatomic abnormalities (like fatty liver, tumors etc). Mirena can likely cause liver enzyme abnormalities but I would expect more enzymes to be affected (not only ggt that is). I can't exclude it though. More tests are needed. I hope I've helped! If you'd like more information, please let me know. It would be very helpful if I had data like the aforementioned ones.
