Suggest Treatment For Ear Discharge And Hearing Loss In Ear

I have been to accident and emergency and sent away with optrex drops, ibuprofen and augmentin 625mg yesterday morning. The doctor did not know the diagnosis of my severe ear pain and loss of hearing although I have Internet researched and I m certain I have acute/serious otitis media.....the hearing loss is getting worse and. Now travelled to both ears but since the doctor prodded my ear it will not stop oozing of water. I have called them for advice but are not interested, please help laura

Hi,

The fullness in both ears, ear discharge and loss of hearing in acute phase are suggestive of the following:
- Obviously the serous or bacterial otitis media in which there is development of fluid or pus behind the ear drums
- The discharge indicates that the pressure within ruptured the ear drums and is in fact is actually good as the fluids comes out and chances of mastoiditis and brain infection are reduced to almost nil. This is very natural protection

I would advise you the following in such a situation:
- Continue Ibuprofen 3 - 4 times a day depending upon your weight
- Continue Augmentin is this is still the drug of choice
- Also, take a decongestant
- Otrivin or such nasal decongestant nasal drops
- Do not blow nose
- Complete the course till cured as it takes almost 3 weeks for complete resolution of such conditions
- Avoid too cold and too hot atmosphere
- If possible take rest for a few days

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
